This week, we’re doing a review of the top 10 results for the Cheapest Domain Name Registration on google. How good are their prices, really?

1. Active-Domain.com has a low price of $2.99, but it’s for a .info domain name, and only for the first year before it returns to the regular price of $9.95 per domain name per year.
2. Dynonames has .info domain names for $1.99. The regular price is $8.99, but be careful – DynoNames doesn’t offer free domain name privacy. 
3. NameCheap.com has domain names for as low as $2.98 for a .info domain. (After the first year, you’ll have to pay the regular price of $9.69 per year.)
4. DomainsareFree.com / Globat.com has cheap domain names for $3.99 for .com domains, but it’s only for the first year (regular price $14.95 per domain name per year), and it’s only for domain name parking. (You can’t actually point it at your website.)

$1.99 for a Domain Name with DynoNames

We’re researching the top 10 domain name registrars when you google the phrase, Cheapest Domain Name Registration.  DynoNames came up today as number 2. 

The best deal we could find on DynoNames: $1.99 USD for a .info domain name for the first year. (After the first year, it will cost you $8.99 per domain name per year.) 

Here’s what caught our eye  with DynoNames. You decide if it’s worth it:

• .com, .org, and .net domain names cost $9.99 per domain name every year. If you pay around $10 per domain name is good, you’re doing ok. The average price charged for a .com domain name is $16 per year. (Based on our research using 28 domain registrars.)
• Private Domain Name Registration costs $6.95 per domain name for the first year. They will charge you $8.95 per domain name per year to renew. This is the deal-breaker for us because there are several domain name registrars that offer free domain name privacy. It doesn’t make sense to pay for domain name privacy.
• You get a free starter web page, but that’s really just a gateway into getting you to use their webhosting services. We’re already with BlueHost

DynoNames.com isn’t bad, but I don’t think we’ll use them. Some of the domain name registrars out there will offer you better deals:

• You can get .info domain names for $0.99 for the first year and still pay the same regular price as DynoNames ($8.99 per year.)
• You can also get .com domain names on sale for the first year ($6.99 for a .com domain name) and their regular price is just slightly cheaper than DynoNames (regular / renewal price: $8.99.) 
• Most importantly, you can get privacy domain registration for free. DynoNames offers a .com domain name for $9.99 per year. Add the domain name privacy feature for $8.95 and you’re paying $18.94 per year for a .com domain name. Compare that with a company that offers you a .com domain name with free privacy registration for just $8.99 per year.

We’re researching the top 10 domain name registrars when you google the phrase, Cheapest Domain Name Registration.  NameCheap comes up as number 3. 

The Best Domain Name Price on NameCheap.com is $2.98 USD for a .info domain name for the first year. (After the first year, it will cost you $9.69 per domain name per year.) 

Overall, NameCheap ain’t bad: 

1.  .com, .org, and .net domain names only cost $9.69 / yr. Anything less than $10 per domain name is good. If you’re paying anything close to $35 per domain name per year, you’re paying too much.

2. .mobi domain names are $7.99 for the first year (and $19.88 / year afterwards.) The average price for a .mobi domain name is around $26 per year. (That’s based on looking at 25 different registrars, including the top 20 registrars listed on Wikipedia.)

3. .tv domain names are reasonably priced. $17.99 for the first year and $24.99 / year after that. (The average price for a .tv domain name is around $45 / year)

4. Whois Guard protection is cheaper than some registrars. Protecting 1 domain namewith NameCheap costs $2.88 per year, where as protecting 5 domain names only costs $7.88 per year. (For a limited time, NameCheap.com is offering free domain name privacy.) Having said that, there are many domain name registrars that offer domain name privacy for free on a regular basis. 

If you’re already with NameCheap, it’s not that bad. But there are domain name registrars out there that offer $0.99 for a .info domain name (regular / renewal price: $8.99), $6.99 for a .com domain name (regular / renewal price: $8.99.), and privacy domain registration for free.

Active-Domain.com isn’t bad. You get the big five domain names (.com, .org, .info, .net, and .biz) for $9.95 per domain name per year. If you’re paying more than $10 for a domain name, you’re really not getting the best price.

But, you can do better.

• If you’re looking for cheap .info domain names, you can get $1.00 USD domain names with GoDaddy. (For the first year only)
• Active-Domain.com will charge you $5 per domain name per year for their Private WHOIS Protection Service. (With BlueHost, you get the domain names for the same price, but you get free privacy domain name registration for all of your domain names.)
• 1-and-1 Internet currently offers the best deal we could find: $0.99 for a .info domain name before it switches back to the regular price of $8.99. ($6.99 for a .com domain name for the first year, before it switches back to the regular price of $8.99 in the second year.) And, they offers free domain hosting privacy registration.

DomainsAreFree.com is powered by glob@t (globat.com). In a world where $10 for a .com domain name is a good price (and $35 per year is just plain ridiculous), $3.99 offered by DomainsAreFree.com seems like a great deal, but read the fine print:

*$3.99 domains are for new domain parking accounts only. 

Do you want to do more than just park your domain name? Do you want to actually use your domain name to run a blog or website? Then you’ll need a hosting plan with globat.com or you’ll need to look elsewhere.

At first glance, hosting with DomainsAreFree.com or globat.com doesn’t look that bad:

• Free domain name registration with hosting. (This is standard. If you didn’t get this you need to keep on looking.)
• Unlimited Disk Space,
• Unlimited Monthly Bandwidth, 
• Hosting of Unlimited Domains
• Unlimited E-mail Accounts
• Free Domain Privacy
• (We get all of these features with BlueHost as well.)

Be careful to look at the fine print: Sure you get “free” domain registration with your web hosting package ($4.44 per month), but it only applies for the first year only. After that you have to pay their regular price of $14.95 per domain name per year – even with hosting! 

The best domain name price we’ve found so far is with 1-and-1 Internet. They offer $0.99 for a .info domain name (regular / renewal price: $8.99). They also offer $6.99 for a .com domain name (regular / renewal price: $8.99.) And, they offer privacy domain registration for free as well.

Absolutely Free Domain Names! C’mon… What’s the Catch?

Dear me, what have we gotten ourselves into? We wanted to share some of the information we’ve learned about domain names with our friends and family. You know, those offers for “Absolutely Free Domain Names” and other such jazz.

There are so many flashy sites, pretty pictures, big numbers, and great deals out there. $0.99 for a domain name? How can you beat that? What’s the catch?

Well. We blog. And, we make mistakes. And we’ve learned a thing or two about domain names. So, buckle up and stay tuned as we share some of our foibles and lessons learned about web hosting and that domain business.

And remember, when it comes to domain names – it’s buyer beware, cause you ain’t getting no refund from those registrars.
